Michigan State University staff and students are getting sick, and officials cannot figure out what is being passed around.

An email was sent out by David Weismantel, M.D., M.S., MSU University Physician, stating multiple reports of gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

"Over the past several days on campus and in our surrounding community, there have been multiple reports of people experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). These symptoms of gastroenteritis typically last one to three days and usually go away without medical attention." David Weismantel, M.D., M.S., MSU University Physician

As of right now, officials do not believe that the illness is food-borne. The Ingham County Health Department has also kept their eyes on the cases reported, monitoring the situation as it grows.

Students who have symptoms and need care are urged to contact Olin Health Center at 517-353-4660. Appointments are required, and those with these symptoms are asked to avoid contact with others. Staff and faculty should stay home if they are ill as well at this time.

If you are experiencing symptoms or have been diagnosed with gastroenteritis, you should rest and stay hydrated. To prevent contracting the illness, you’re encouraged to frequently wash your hands with soap and water.

"MSU staff are taking several precautionary steps in the residence halls and dining facilities, as they do during any time of increased illness on campus, including changing out self-service utensils more frequently and sanitizing common areas and touchpoints every half-hour." David Weismantel, M.D., M.S., MSU University Physician
