New Michigan Law Will Charge Porch Pirates with a Felony
Put down that package if it's not yours or you'll pay the price.
There's not a whole lot of information on how many packages are stolen every day in Michigan, but in New York City, 90,000 packages are stolen every day. In total, about 11 million are stolen every year throughout the country.
Michigan lawmakers have introduced legislation that will make the penalties for being a porch pirate stiffer than they are now. The first time you're caught, it could be up to a year in jail. The second time, it's a felony.
Police say that, with or without a doorbell camera, it's tough to catch porch pirates in the act. But they're hoping that, if the penalties are more severe, people will think twice before stealing.
