Go Here & Eat This: A Righteous Reuben @ Dan’s Coney Island In Lansing

I moved back home to Michigan 3 years ago from Alaska. On my list of must haves when I got back: Better Made Chips, Faygo, Coney Island hot dogs.

Trying to explain our Coney Island dogs to folks not from here is a chore and frustrating to say in the least. You also run into people who can only associate those words with New York.

It's a Midwest thang. Indiana tries to get in on it, Ohio and their Cincinnati chili, and people who basically feel any type of chili dog or hot dog with sloppy joe sauce on it qualifies. They don't. Michiganders will agree our coneys are the best. And we've got our own instate rivalry going on. Flint style versus Detroit style. Apparently there are Jackson and Kalamazoo variations as well. We'll get to them later.

Because I'm not here to talk about the coneys at Dan's Coney Island on Pennsylvania in Lansing. Even though they are delicious.

Nor am I here to talk about these as they too are equally delicious and sugar coma inducing. You are not ready for Dan's Cinnamon Roll Pancakes. That is a whole 'nother article unto itself.

What I am here to talk about is this.

It would take me going to a neighborhood Coney Island spot here in Lansing to have one of the best corned beef sandwiches in the city. They come in a bunch of different variations at Dan's but man...THAT REUBEN THO!

I've had it a couple of times and it's never failed. They are not lying when they say melt in your mouth good. The crunch on the grilled rye, the creamy gooey goodness of Swiss cheese melting into the corned beef and blending in with the sauerkraut is a thing of beauty. You've got your dressing on the side. And honestly, this sandwich is so good, I'm halfway through it before I realize I haven't even opened said dressing.

Sauerkraut not your thing. No worries. They have a Russian Reuben with coleslaw on pumpernickel or a Turkey version. Peep the sandwich menu and more HERE under Deli Sandwiches.

I share this because I love local restaurants that need our business and our support during this time.

And because I've paid lots more for corned beef sandwiches that were nowhere near as good as this one from Dan's.
