Does Mustard Beer Mean Craft Beer Has Gone Too Far?

Okay, look, I am a big craft beer lover and I have absolutely seen my fair share of obscure flavors. Some work, some don't but I really don't know how I feel about Mustard flavored beer.

I've had a beer that claimed to taste like a Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pie and, my goodness, it did.

I've also had one that was a dark coffee-flavored stout that was infused with habanero peppers and that was incredible too!

Honestly, when I first saw the suggestion of a mustard beer I thought "okay, turn back, we've gone too far" but now I'm thinking "honestly, it could work."

This all comes from seeing the story on MLive about Oskar Blues Brewery announcing a partnership with French's to make a MUSTARD BEER.

So why on Earth did Oskar Blues, known for their beers like Hazy IPA, Dave's Pale Ale and Mama's Little Yella Pills, decide to take this mustard-y venture?

According to a news release, as reported by MLive, “The teams at Oskar Blues and French’s wanted to come together to create the brightest, boldest brew of the summer, just in time for National Mustard Day and backyard grilling. And what goes better with BBQ than Classic Yellow Mustard and beer? Nothing else, that’s what.”

Hear me out here, I really do enjoy a tart, sour beer and their description of what the mustard beer will be actually sounds pretty dang good:

It will be a "5.2% semi-tart tropical wheat beer" and while mustard was a key ingredient, there are also complimentary flavors like key lime, lemon, tangerine and passion fruit, according to Oskar Blues' head brewer, Juice Drapeau.

Now if you want to get one on tap, you'd have to get out to Oskar Blues' taprooms in either Colorado or North Carolina. However, you can get six-packs of it online for $19.99.

It really does not sound that bad, at least to a craft beer connoisseur, what do you think?
