I have a love/hate relationship with self checkout. Is it a quicker option for me instead of waiting in line behind someone who has a fully loaded basket? Most times yes. But sometimes, you get stuck in self checkout. In a long line. And then there's always that one person who has no idea what they are doing. Cause, let's be real, not everyone can handle self checkout. And then even for those of us who are quite skilled at doing it for ourselves, the machines sometimes seem to have a mind of their own. And then we have to wait for the ONE on call cashier to come over. After they're done helping the other 5 people who don't know what they are doing and the machines malfunctioning.

I get it. This is supposed to be a convenience for us. The shopper. The consumer. But let's be real. All these perks for us come at a cost. Like, eliminating jobs. And some people have flat out said, "I won't use self checkout. You won't have me working for free."

I agree with the latter to a point. If I'm going to self check out, there should be a visible and real perk to it. I am working. Ringing up my own groceries. Where's my employee discount. 10%? More points in the loyalty plan every time I do it myself. I get a point at my favorite coffee shop every time I buy a cup and use my card. Surely, I can get a little love  every time I ring up my own groceries. Right?

If we're losing jobs as a convenience to us, and we the customers are not getting anything out of it, seems like only one side of this exchange is really getting the better of this deal.
