Bankruptcy and Restructuring
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a few weeks ago, and nearly 300 locations nationwide are closing their doors, including 11 right here in Michigan.
Which Michigan Stores Are Closing
So which locations are set to close in Michigan? They are spread across the state, hitting malls and shopping centers where Claire’s has been a familiar stop for shoppers of all ages. Here’s the list:
- Livonia
- Westland
- Brighton
- Taylor
- Howell
- Byron Center
- Saginaw
- Chesterfield
- Walker
- Fort Gratiot
- Muskegon
In total, the closures will affect 235 Claire’s stores and 56 Icing stores across the United States by early September. The company says it is part of a restructuring effort to keep the brand afloat after financial struggles, including declining mall traffic and growing competition from online retailers.
Why Claire’s Is Struggling
For many, Claire’s was more than just a store. It was the place where countless people got their first pair of earrings, stocked up on sparkly accessories before school dances, and made memories inside the signature purple-themed shop.
Michigan is losing a lot of locations, and the impact will definitely be felt, especially in communities where the local mall may no longer have a Claire’s.
The closure is an ongoing trend of many retail stores that are struggling to comepete in the digital revolution, where many can purchase items online rather than have to shop at a physical location.
