Your Area Code Is Changing If You Live In This Michigan City
A few Michigan area codes will be seeing a change, as we install the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Much like 911, you will simply need to dial 988 and you will be connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
What Michigan area codes are going to see a change?
Four Michigan area codes will be changing actually. Those changing area codes are going to be 989, 906, 810 as well as 616. St. Johns, Michigan would be our closest neighbor to see the change.
There are 35 states with a total of 82 area codes that use 988 to allof for seven-digit dialing.
"To prepare for implementation of a quick way to dial the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline — using only 988 — these area codes must transition to 10-digit dialing for all calls, including local calls," the Federal Communications Commision told WSYM.
If you have to call a phone in one of those area codes, come October 24th, you will have to diall a 10 digits to that number. In reaction anyone who calls 988 will be directly connected to the National Suicide Prevent Lifeline.
What this means is that, beginning on Oct. 24, if you're calling from a line in one those area codes, you must dial all 10 digits so the North American Numbering Plan Administrator can ensure all calls to 988 are directed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
When will this line be active?
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, is expected to go live on July 16th, 2022.
