New Netflix Documentary Based on a Michigan Town
Michigan is popping up in the spotlight again, and not for Big Penny this time. There is a brand-new Netflix true-crime documentary called Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, which is making waves and was even filmed right here in Michigan.
The story revolves around the small town of Beal City, which found itself shaken by a disturbing cyberbullying scandal that left many families and students reeling.
Beal City at the Center: Michigan as the Backdrop
Director Skye Borgman, who is well-known for her gripping true-crime work, chose to film key moments across Michigan, including at St. Johns High School. She stated that it was important to showcase the actual settings where these kids lived, studied, and built their lives.
The goal was to have the documentary not only tell the story but also show the true backdrop of Michigan.
Director Skye Borgman’s Approach to Location Filming
The film follows the anonymous string of cruel text messages that escalated into something far worse. Borgman doesn’t just explore the mystery of who was behind the texts, she digs much deeper. It left a huge emotional toll on those who were bullied, from students to their families and even peers.
Of course, the big question is: who was sending these messages? There have been no hints as to who was doing this, not yet at least, because the reveal is what makes this story hit so hard.
From Anonymous Texts to Emotional Fallout
If you’re a fan of tense, small-town true crime with a very real modern twist, Unknown Number may be worth the watch.
The show is now streaming on Netflix and may make you think twice the next time you get an unexpected text from an unknown number.
