Michigan just saw it's first batch of spring storms this past weekend, which has sparked a bit of a frenzy with scammers.

It's not uncommon for hackers and scammers to attempt to take advantage of you during hard times. This past storm, was no exception to that.

Scam Alert: Trending New Scam Targeting Michiganders after Tragedy

There are reports of some new scams arising, post-storm, here in Mid-Michigan. The massive system moved in quick, destroying homes and countless properties across the area.

Northern Michigan, saw the worst of it, with a major ice storm hitting most of Northern Michigan that left hundreds without power. Some may not see power restoration for about 3 days, according to sources.

So, what should you be watching out for post-storm?

 

  • Fraudulent Contractor Scams:

    • Offer quick repairs for storm damage

  • Fake Insurance Adjusters and Claims Scams:

    • Impersonate insurance adjusters

  • Phishing Scams:

    • Pretend to be from trusted entities like utility companies or government agencies

  • Charity Scams:

    • Solicit donations under the guise of aiding storm recovery

  • Grant or Loan Scams:

    • Advertise emergency grants or low-interest loans for storm recovery.

While, not every business or service is after you for ill-intent after a major storm, you should always use caution if someone reaches out directly to you. Help may come in many forms, but typically, if they're coming to you, or positing in a local Facebook Group, offering help, you should do your research before accepting any help.
