It's been a few months but once again police are warning everyone about a phone scam in the Lansing-Area. Scammers will call and state they have friends or family that being held by the Ingham County Sheriff's Office and claim they need money to avoid major criminal charges.

In some cases the phone number on the Caller ID showed (517) 676-2431, which is the Sheriff's Office main number.

One thing, the Sheriff's Office does NOT make phone calls, send e-mails, or faxes to collect money for warrants, taxes, or other Court costs. They also would NEVER request payment in the form of gift cards.

Websites and cell phone apps are available for scammers to hide their real phone numbers.

If you have recieved any of these calls DO NOT send money, purchase gift cards, make wire transfers, or give out credit card information.
