A Michigan State Police officer had to be revived with Narcan after he was exposed to fentanyl during a traffic stop this afternoon (5/20) in Mid-Michigan.

How did it happen

Authorities say Michigan State Police officers responded to reports of a reckless driver in Kawkawlin, which is near Bay City. The officers then initiated a traffic stop on M-13 near Beaver Rd. They apprehended a driver who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and began searching his car.

The officer then came into contact with a substance that is believed to be fentanyl. After adjusting his facemask, he became disoriented and lethargic. After he fell to the ground, another officer recognized the effects of fentanyl exposure and administered Narcan. Narcan is used to revive patients who are suffering from a drug overdose.

Officer expected to be OK

The trooper was taken to a nearby hospital where he is recovering. He is expected to be OK and reports indicate that he will be released soon.

The 32-year old driver is currently under evaluation. He could face felony drug charges.
