Urgent Recall: Above‑Ground Pools in Michigan Pose Fatal Risk
Over 5 million above-ground pools, 48 inches and taller, have been recalled here in Michigan, as well as statewide, after nine toddlers drowned in six states between 2007 and 2022, one of which took place here in Michigan.
The Danger For The Recall?
The danger comes after a seemingly harmless feature, which is external compression straps, wrapped tightly around the pool wall. They were added to support the structure, and these straps double as footholds for young children to allow them to climb in, even without a ladder. This feature has led to fatal drownings.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sounded the alarm on July 21, 2025, partnering with the pool makers, Intex, Bestway, and Polygroup to issue the voluntary recall.
In Michigan, backyard pools tend to be a summer staple, so you may want to check the product details on this recall. If you have purchased on of these pools since 2002, at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Amazon, Costco, or Sam's Club, you should check the liner for bran and model information.
What To Do If You Have The Product
- Stop using immediately
- Cut off the compression strap
- Contact the manufacturer
The Product Details and Information:
- Bestway & Coleman – “Power Steel,” “Steel Pro,” “Coleman Power Steel” (sold 2008–2024)
- Intex – “Metal Frame,” “Ultra Frame” (2002–2012); “Prism Frame,” “Ultra XTR Frame” (2024–2025 via Intexcorp.com & Walmart)
- Polygroup – multiple models including “Summer Waves,” “Summer Escapes,” “Funsicle,” “Sand n Sun,” “Blue Wave”
The pools would have retailed anywhere from $400 to over $1,000. More than 260,000 of these pools were also sold in Canada.
There are no refunds offered with this current recall. Instead, the Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup brands are providing free repair kits to modify the units to make them safer.
