The Official Ranking of 2025’s Best Places to Live in the Lansing Area
If you've ever wondered where people want to live in Mid-Michigan, Niche did what we all secretly Google before moving: they've ranked the best places to live in the Lansing area.
Specifically, they based rankings on real data from 2025—crime, quality of schools, cost of living, employment, and local amenities.
2025 Best Places to Live in the Lansing Area
And the suburbs took the top spots!
The city of Lansing itself made the list (a bit further down than I would have thought), landing around number 12 in the regional rankings. That ranking is solid, but there's definitely room for improvement.
Lansing scored a B- in public schools, a B- in housing, a B in good for families, a C- in crime and safety, an A in nightlife, and an A+ in diversity. Lansing got an overall grade of B+.
Here are the best places to live in the Lansing area according to Niche:
20. Aurelius Township
19. Oneida
18. Olive Township
17. Eagle Township
16. Bingham Township
15. Edgemont Park
14. Mason
13. St. Johns
12. Lansing
11. Dimondale
10. Wheatfield Township
9. Holt
8. Grand Ledge
7. Williamston
6. Waverly
5. DeWitt Charter Township
4. East Lansing
3. DeWitt
2. Haslett
1. Okemos
It's no surprise that Okemos and Haslett make the top of the list. Okemos scored A's across the board (one stat they didn't have was crime and safety), and Haslett got all A's except for one B+ in housing.

In short: whether you're looking for the best schools, low crime, or an excellent nightlife, the Lansing area has a place for you. This ranking might just help you find the perfect place to call home.
