What’s Gonna Happen with Charlotte’s Old Tasty Twist?
When we were little kids, our introduction to those little shacks alongside the road selling ice cream came with Dairy Queen. As we grew older and traveled more, we became familiar with all the Dairy Queen knockoffs: Tastee Freez, Twistee Treat, Tipsy Scoop, Frigid Whip, Dairy Freeze.....and any town that put their name before “Queen”, “Freeze”, “Treat”, or “Twist”.
One such place that is fondly remembered by those in the Charlotte area was the Tasty Twist, located along the roadside at 102 Lansing Street.
When it actually opened is up for debate, but old aerial photos show there was a little structure there as far back as the 1950s and was known as Tastee-Freez. Other sources state that the Tasty Twist opened in the 2000s and closed in 2022.

According to past customers, the Tasty Twist had a lot more than just ice cream. Fondly remembered are the watermelon slushes, sloppy joes, banana splits, and even a miniature golf course that dated back into the 1950s
Now it sits empty along the road, waiting for someone to re-open. I notice that it’s been re-painted. Is that a sign that someone bought it and will operate a new ice cream stand? Better than tearing it down, that’s for sure.
