The 5 Most Expensive Appliances to Run for Michigan Homeowners
Michigan already forks out enough money just trying to survive pothole season and road salt therapy. Well, it turns out, our appliances are joining the fun by emptying our wallets while smiling politely from the laundry room.

Why Michigan Energy Costs Hit Appliances Hard
According to new data analyzed by Appliance Repair Las Vegas using Energy Star and the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) numbers, Michigan ranks 11th among states for the cost of running common household appliances. The grand total? On average, Michiganders spend $299.82 per year on running appliances, about 12% more than the national average. Love that for us.
Top 5 Appliance Energy Drains in Michigan
Here are the 5 appliances that are driving up your energy bill every month:
1. The Clothes Dryer - $122.93 (Electric)
The undisputed king of burning money. Electric dryers are energy hogs, especially in winter when jeans take three business days to dry. Gas dryers cost less to operate, but electric still dominates Michigan basements and our bank accounts.
2. Refrigerators with Bottom Freezer - $75.09 (Electric)
According to Appliance Repair Las Vegas, your fridge with a bottom freezer never sleeps. It never rests. It quietly hikes up your bill while holding onto your many bottles of expired salad dressings.
3. Dishwasher - $45.19 (Electric)
Convenient? Absolutely. Cheap? Absolutley not. Still better than handwashing, though.
4. Electric Range Cooker - $36.54 (Electric)
Electric stoves cost more to run than gas ranges, which heat up faster and drain less cash while you burn dinner. Plus, gas stoves work even when the power goes out, making them perfect for making chili in the dark.
5. Clothes Washer - $20.07 (Electric)
The least offensive of the electric offenders. Efficient, polite, but still not free.
Michigan Reality Check
For perspective, Utah residents, the most affordable state for energy, run these same 5 appliances for 74% less. Michigan pays more because our electricity averages 19.23 cents per kWh, which is starting to feel a bit personal.
