This year has plenty of acts who have had a great 2018, who stick out among the sea of new artists. Music has always been super-competitive, but that becomes even more apparent when the Best New Artist nominees are revealed prior to the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. During the awards show on Monday night (Aug. 20), out of six other artists, Cardi B came away victorious.

Cardi B came out of seemingly nowhere, first picking up through a combination of social media and her time on VH1 reality show Love & Hip-Hop: New York, where her outsized personality stole the show. She was recording music in years prior, but 2017 was when it became apparent that Cardi was a superstar, with her single "Bodak Yellow" topping the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually going six-times platinum. Her 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy, was also No. 1 in the country and her recent single "I Like It" is killing the charts, too.

Cardi B had some words for the doubters during her acceptance speech: "I had the baby, I carried the baby and I'm still winning awards!" And she seemed to throw some subliminal shots at those who think her place in the game was bought. "God gave me something that money can't buy, bitch!" she said.

She faced some tough competition in the Best New Artist category, holding off pop singer Bazzi, talented Beyoncé proteges Chloe x Halle, Los Angeles singer Hayley Kiyoko, the ever-present Lil Uzi Vert and 2018 XXL Freshman Lil Pump. Any of these names could have won, as they all had a strong 2018.

Recently, Cardi B was the topic of a panel at a sociology conference in Philadelphia just last week, which goes to show how famous she is truly becoming. She also may have a new album on the way.
