Becky G may only be 17, but growing up in a tough situation matured her pretty quickly. So quickly, in fact, that she had her mid-life crisis before she even hit the age of 10.

The California native spoke with Rolling Stone about her early start in the show biz. When she was nine, her family moved into her grandparents’ garage after they could no longer afford to pay the mortgage on their house. Becky hoped to get a job to help, but rather than find a small gig mowing lawns or bagging groceries, she jumped straight into the big leagues.

“I didn’t realize I wanted to pursue [music] as a career till I was nine, which is weird because it’s still really little,” she told the publication. She added, “That was literally my mid-life crisis when I was nine years old. That’s when I felt like, ‘OK, I gotta get my life together. What am I gonna do?’ I pushed that on myself at a younger age than the average kid because at the time my family had lost our home.”

But why singing? “I figured, ‘Why not go into entertainment?' I love entertaining people. I always loved being extra loud. … So I sat down with my parents, and I said, ‘Give me six months, and we can get me an agent and a manager.’”

The young singer started her career in the spotlight with commercials, and eventually began writing her own music and posting videos of music covers to YouTube. Her 2011 cover of Kanye West and Jay Z’s ‘Otis’ is what put her on the radar for star producer Dr. Luke and launched her singing career.

Three years later, Becky G is on her way to a hit with her latest and crazy infectious single ‘Shower’ — which, by the way, she did not come up with in the shower.

“It didn’t come to me when I was singing in the shower, but I am a shower singer and someone was making me feel some kind of way about it,” she explained. “It’s doing really great, it hasn’t dropped from the iTunes Top 200. Something feels special and really right — but fingers crossed, because you never know.”
