Wendy’s is reviewing some of its underperforming restaurants nationwide. That could include a few locations here in Michigan.

Why Wendy’s Is Closing Stores

The company told investors it will begin shutting down a “mid-single-digit percentage” of its nearly 6,000 U.S. locations, starting now and continuing into 2026. As of right now, there is no list, but that translates to roughly 200–350 closures, and some could be in Michigan.

So what can trigger these closures? Corporate says it’s targeting consistently underperforming, outdated, or weak trade-area locations.

If a store has lagging sales or needs more remodel dollars than it can justify, it goes on a watch list. Some restaurants may get new owners or upgrades, while others will simply close.

Could Michigan Locations Be Affected?

Michigan Wendy’s locations could be at risk. There are hundreds of stores across the state, and we’ve already seen Michigan closures in the past when the brand cleaned up older units.

With this new round, the company hasn’t named any specific addresses. Older, slower stores are the most at-risk locations for a shutdown.

Red Flags at Your Local Store

There isn’t a public “at-risk” map. The best way to tell if your local branch may be hit is to watch for reduced hours over long stretches, visible deferred maintenance, “under new management” changes, or a remodel that never seems to start.

Not All News Is Bad

Corporate also says franchisees are being asked to reinvest or right-size, so some locations could see upgrades.
