Michigan families can breathe a sigh of relief as federal food safety officials have withdrawn a recent public health alert regarding Great Value Dino Nuggets. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced this week that the previous warning, which cited potential lead contamination, was issued in error following a laboratory mistake.

A Laboratory Error Caused the Scare

The initial alarm was raised after a routine sample collected by the New York State Department of Health reportedly tested positive for lead. This triggered a widespread alert for the 29-ounce bags of frozen, dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets sold at Walmart locations nationwide, including here in Michigan.

Given the severe health risks associated with lead exposure in children, the news caused immediate concern for parents and retailers. However, an investigation by the FSIS revealed that the "positive" result was a false alarm.

Verification of Safety for Michigan Families

Officials had determined that the sample had been compromised by trace contamination within the laboratory environment during the testing process, rather than the food product itself.

To ensure public safety, the FSIS and manufacturer, Dorada Foods, conducted extensive follow-up testing on the original lot and several surrounding batches. Every follow-up test confirmed that there were no elevated lead levels present.

Check Your Labels: What to Look For

The retracted alert specifically concerned bags with a "Best If Used By" date of February 10, 2027, and the establishment number "P-27303." The USDA has now verified that these products are safe for consumption and do not pose a health risk.

Consumers who still have the product in their freezers no longer need to dispose of the product or look for a refund.
