Lansing Activates Code Red Plan During Dangerous Heat Wave

With the heat index pushing past 100, Lansing is opening up places for people to cool down as extreme heat settles into Mid-Michigan.

The City of Lansing activated a Code Red extreme heat weather plan with most of the area under an Extreme Heat Warning. The plan is in effect Monday, June 29th through Thursday, July 2, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

That means several cooling centers are available for anyone who needs a break from the heat, especially during the hottest part of the day.

A few different places will be open to anyone who is in need.

• Letts Community Center on West Kalamazoo Street
• Foster Community Center on North Foster Street
• Gier Community Center on Hall Street
• Alfreda Schmidt Southside Community Center on Wise Road
• Lansing City Hall

Residents can also cool off at the Capital Area District Libraries branches, the CATA Transportation Center, and other public spaces with air conditioning during regular business hours.

For families, places like Hunter Park Pool and Splash Pad is an option, with daily swim times from 1 to 4 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. Hawk Island County Park also has a beach and splash pad open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset.

There are also additional options for people experiencing homelessness. Advent House Ministries, The Lansing Nest, and City Rescue Mission locations are offering daytime or overnight, depending on the site.

If you have to be outdoors, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and check on older family members, neighbors, pets, or anyone who might not have air conditioning.
