It was the last full moon of the summer, the Harvest Moon, named for the days before tractors with headlights, Alan MacRobert at Sky & Telescope Magazine says, according to USA Today.  "Having moonlight to work by was crucial to getting the harvest in quickly before rain caused it to rot."
