Earlier this week, I had found a few places just outside of West Michigan where you could go watch a community firework show. Unfortunately due to the spikes in positive COVID-19 cases in the Lansing area and here in West Michigan, some of those previously happening firework shows are now canceled.

Fourth of July Fireworks in Portland

Portland canceled the planned fireworks show at the Bogue Flats Recreational Area that was scheduled for Friday night. According to the Ionia Sentinel-Standard, the cancellation came after the Ionia Prosecuting Attorney let organizers know the event would probably violate pandemic restrictions.

The restriction in violation would be that no public outdoor gathering with more than 100 people in attendance. Organizers reached out to county officials to inquire if they'd be issuing citations for violation of the order, and told Ionia Sentinel-Standard they did provide much clarity which led organizers to decide to cancel the event altogether

Cadillac Freedom Festival And Fireworks Also Canceled

The other fireworks show that I mentioned in my earlier list was the Cadillac Freedom Festival which organizers were planning a weekend full of events and capping it off on Sunday with a large public fireworks show over Lake Cadillac. Wednesday afternoon organizers had to make the difficult decision to cancel the festival and fireworks show after talking with health officials and realizing they wouldn't be able to ensure proper social distancing, according to 9&10 News.

On the original list, there were still a couple more listed, but as the state of Michigan is seeing a spike in cases around our area, I'm thinking that not many communities will be taking the risk of getting people together and not being able to properly social distance.

I don't know.  Maybe we can redo the Fourth of July in the fall or something? Just throwing that idea out there.
