If you do your banking at MSU Federal Credit Union, you may want to pay attention to this. The credit union says that it found and removed card-skimming devices from a small number of its ATMs.
What MSUFCU Found
The issue was caught on Sunday, Oct. 12, and the compromised machines were pulled out of service, checked, and then put back into service. The credit union doesn't list exact locations or a final count, but says roughly two dozen members have been impacted and were immediately contacted.
Both local and state law enforcement are currently investigating this incident.
What Members Should Do
If you do your banking with MSUFCU, you should scan your recent transactions and set up real-time alerts. You should also lock your card if anything looks off or suspicious. MSUFCU notes it monitoring flagged the devices quickly, and points members to tools like Card Lock/Unlock and eAlerts.
If you see a charge that you do not recognize, you should report it immediately so they can reverse it and reissue your card.
How Skimmers Work
Card skimmers are small add-on gadgets that criminals stick over a card slot, sometimes paired with something like a tiny camera to capture your PIN. At an ATM, give the reader a wiggle. If it shifts or looks bulky, walk away. Use your hand as a shield at the keypad. If you can, try using indoor ATM's or ones inside busy branches where tampering is tougher.
While the people affected by this skimmer have been notified, it is a friendly reminder that scammers are still using old tactics to get a hold of your information.
