If you do use a window unit, you might want to check out this important information, as some units are being recalled here in Michigan, over mold concerns.
Why Are These AC Units Being Recallevd?
The brand Midea U and U+ window air conditioners are currently being recalled, nearly 1.7 million nationwide, over poor drainage inside of the unit, which is leading to mold concerns.
These units were mainly sold from March of 2020 to May of 2025 at Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart and other stores, varying in price by store.
Health Risks Linked to Mold Exposure
Extended mold exposure can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory infections, nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, and itchy and watery eyes.
As of now, there are 152 reported cases of mold, and 17 health complications linked to mold exposure over the recalled health product. Many of these units were sold and commonly installed during the summer months, as many residents are looking to beat the high energy costs with warmer temperatures.
How to Get a Refund or Free Repair
If you have one of these units, you can contact Midea for a free repair on your unit, or based on either your purchase date or manufacture date, you might be eligible to get a refund on your window unit.
Tips for Safe Window Unit Operation
To help avoid possible complications on just about any window unit, you should regularly clean your air filters, as well as drain any excess water from the unit, to avoid any mold growth inside the unit.
Many are looking to save money during the summer months, and peak energy hours are from 2pm to 7pm, depending on your electric provider and other factors. A lot of central air units can rack up an energy bill fast, leading to more people leaning towards window AC units.
Routine maintenance should always be done on these units to avoid any possible health risks.
