Ferrero, the Italian family-owned powerhouse behind Nutella, is set to acquire WK Kellogg Company for about $3.1 billion, paying $23 per share.

Why Is This A Big Deal For Michigan?

WK Kellogg traces its roots to Battle Creek, where in 1906 the Kellogg brothers accidentally invented flaked cereal. From there, the rest is basically history with brand names like Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Rice Krispies, to even Special K. The company better known to the public today is Kellanova, which has stood as a stand-alone since 2023.

Ferrero Bought More U.S. Brand Names

Ferrero, which was founded in Italy back in 1946, and is still owned by the Ferrero family to this day, has been expanding its U.S. presence by buying Nestle's brands, and even the popular Wells Enterprise Ice Cream brand back in 2022. The Kellogg purchase would give the company an even bigger foothold in the breakfast food category, as a vast marketing and distribution operation is present here in the United States.

Thanks to the news, WK Kellogg shares, jumped over 30% in trading so far. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, pending the shareholder and regulatory sign-off. WK Kellogg could go private with its stock delisted from the NYSE.

The company could give Kellogg's brand name a fresh new lift, and possibly even help grow more jobs in Battle Creek at the same time.
