Forget all your preconceived notions about ritzy towns in Michigan because one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the US isn't in Southeast Michigan.

HGTV has spoken and one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the entire country isn't a glamorous suburb of Detroit. It's a tiny town with a population of fewer than 300 people located on the shore of Lake Michigan.

You don't have to be ready to move or rich - I'm certainly not - but it's nice to explore some of the nicer parts of Michigan, or in this case, the most expensive neighborhood in our state.

Welcome to the Quaint Little Town of Lakeside in Berrien County.

What makes Lakeside so expensive? HGTV used data from Zillow and CashNetUSA and did some calculations to come up with the most expensive neighborhood in each state.

The short answer is real estate.

According to HGTV, the average home in Lakeside costs $2,652,417, but you can expect to pay more for property on the shore of Lake Michigan. Here's an example:

A nine-bedroom Georgian estate with a wine cellar, swimming pool, and guest house is on track to be among the priciest sales, thanks to a list price of $9,450,000. (Although it appears the price of this particular home has now been lowered to $8,950,000.)
