If you hear a weird, random boom this weekend and it's so loud, you feel like your soul is leaving your body, don't worry. It's not a ghost and you're not imagining things. It could be something 'Pure' Michigan: a frost quake.
Yes, it's a real thing. Yes, it sounds made up. No, we didn't invent it to scare the Midwest.
What Is a Frost Quake?
A frost quake (also called an ice quake or cryoseism) occurs when the ground is saturated with water and temperatures drop rapidly. The water freezes, expands, and puts pressure on the soil and rocks until something finally breaks. When that pressure is released, it creates a loud bang and sometimes a slight tremor.
And before your brain goes into disaster movie mode: This is not an earthquake. It's not tectonic plates shifting. Michigan is not turning into California. It's just winter being dramatic. Unfortunately, we're in the perfect season for frost quakes.
Why Michigan Is Ripe for Frost Quakes
Temperatures across Michigan are dropping below freezing, wind chills could reach -45 degrees, and some parts of northern Michigan have already seen temperatures around -30 degrees.

Add to that the recent thaw (hello, saturated ground) and the relatively thin snowpack in some parts of the Lower Peninsula, and congratulations—our state has checked all the boxes for a frost quake.
And what does it sound like?
What Does a Frost Quake Sound Like?
People describe it as:
- A dull thud
- A loud crack
- A distant gunshot
- Someone throwing furniture around upstairs
- Your house making a very drastic decision
The worst part? You usually can't tell where it's coming from, so you're left standing in your kitchen wondering what just happened.
Are Frost Quakes Dangerous?
The good news: frost quakes are usually more startling than dangerous. They can occasionally cause small cracks in pavement or foundations, but most of the time they're just there to traumatize us a little and make winter more interesting.

So if you hear a mysterious rumble this weekend, don't panic. It's probably just the earth reacting to Michigan winter the same way we do—loudly and dramatically. Honestly, at this point, frost quakes feel like just another square on the Michigan winter bingo card, right next to thundersnow, tire-shredding potholes, and the "why do I live here?" season.
