Sometimes I forget how different three parts of Lansing can feel, especially when they're just a few minutes apart.

Apparently someone has decided we shouldn't have to pick just one.

September 26 is Downtown Day. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, businesses throughout Downtown Lansing, Old Town and REO Town will be marking the occasion. Downtown Lansing Inc. describes it as one citywide celebration of the businesses, history and people that make each neighborhood its own thing.

Maybe there's someplace downtown you've walked past a hundred times but never actually gone inside. Maybe you haven't wandered around Old Town in a while. Or maybe REO Town is one of those places you've been meaning to go check out "one of these days."

Well, Saturday could be the day.

How the Downtown Day Shopping Passport Works

There's also a Downtown Day shopping passport. Make purchases at participating businesses throughout the three districts, and you'll have a chance to win a prize.

Downtown Lansing Inc. says part of the day will also focus on the history, people and places that helped shape the three neighborhoods. The organization says the bigger goal is getting people to support Lansing's different districts together instead of thinking of them as separate little islands.

Michigan-based Ivan Iler was commissioned by the City of Lansing to build Portrait of a Dreamer. Portrait of a Dreamer is 15-foot-tall, stainless steel, interactive statue on Michigan Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. There's a crank in the front of the statue that allows you to turn the gears in its head and the ones spilling out.
