The Monster Green Squirrel That Terrorizes Montcalm County
The town of Amble in Montcalm County is practically a ghost town. It originated in the late 1800s with a post office lasting from 1887 to 1953. Named after the reverend of the Danish Lutheran Church Ole Amble, the town still has some cool old buildings remaining including a one-room schoolhouse.
Aside from a postal stop, Amble was also a railroad stop along the Detroit, Grand Rapids and Western Railroad (now the Pere Marquette Railroad).
Once upon a time, along with the post office and depot, Amble had a blacksmith, church, cider mill, creamery, feed mill, lumber outlets, produce store, real estate company, saloon, saw mill, two general stores and two hotels. Not much is left.

One thing that the local Amblonians are hanging onto is the legend of the monstrous green squirrel that terrorizes the town...and some swear it’s not a legend or myth.
This huge green squirrel is the size of a small cow or a ’72 Buick; why a Buick was picked out for this comparison is beyond me. This squirrel is so large, it towers over Amble’s tallest hill. When the squirrel verbalizes – squeaks, chirps, etc . - the sound can be heard through the entire town.
The most curious thing about this whole thing is, the squirrel is only seen and heard at night after a few hours at the local bar. After time spent tipping more than a few, some locals claim they’ve seen this squirrel – so close, that they describe the eye coloring as either blue, brown, red, or yellow. And it has green fur.
Now really – if the locals are really experiencing something, what else could it be? Excluding Bigfoot and Dogman, could it be a bear? It’s the only thing that makes sense, right?
