Two Saugatuck Restaurants Permanently Close, Go Up For Sale
It's always sad to see local restaurants close. The silver lining is that two eateries in Saugatuck are up for sale, and something awesome could open in their places!
The Mermaid Bar and Grill and Baldy’s Smoked Meats at 340 Water St. near downtown Saugatuck have shut down. Located in Dockside Market Place in Saugatuck, 11 of 12 units are now available for sale or lease.
The Mermaid Bar was purchased by restaurateur Eric Chaitin in 2016. In 2019, he opened Baldy's Smoked Meats.
According to Wood TV 8, neither will be reopening.

Chaitlin also purchased Ottawa Beach Inn near Holland State Park in 2014, later turning it into Playa Tacos & Tequilas in 2022. According to the Holland Sentinel, it was listed for sale in December. A listing agent told Wood TV 8 there is a new tenant, but he could not say what the new restaurant will be, though the goal is to have it open by Memorial Day 2024.
According to the listing for the Saugatuck properties, The Mermaid Bar and Grill is 3,983 square feet, with a 2,006 square foot patio.
The menu included starters like Wagyu Beef Dumplings, Mussels, and Spanish Octopus. There was also a raw bar and fresh fish served daily like Swordfish, Salmon, and Walleye. You could also find Steak, Sandwiches, and a large selection of cocktails.
