"It's very good when it's hot like tea. In Detroit we drank it when we were sick, we cooked with it..." (Detroit Public TV)

To live in Michigan is to know two iconic pops.

Faygo and Vernors.

And for some strange reason, those of us from the Mitten State swear by our favorite ginger concoction as a cure all for all that ails us.

A surprising number of people use Vernors as a cure for stomach aches, hangovers… really, any minor sickness.

Ginger may actually help with nausea, but the sugar in ginger ale cancels out health benefits, according to Business Insider. (Huffpost)

So why and how did Vernors become our magical elixir?

Well, maybe because way back in the day it was invented by a pharmacist and civil war vet by the name of James Vernor back in 1866. Come on...pharmacist.

Could it be because of the ginger? And ginger is known to have some health and healing properties.

Believe it or not, when it comes down to it, it's just a little of this and a little of that. Mostly a remedy handed down and still believed to this day.

True, a little ginger might be able to help your tummy and ease some nausea. But as stated before, there really isn't any in Vernors.

If nothing else, it's like comfort food providing a placebo effect. And they have never made any claims that it had medicinal properties.

Folks drink ginger ale and in Michigan specifically Vernors because, well we just do. And that thought alone will make you feel better and provide you with some relief.

Couple of other fun facts.

Most folks would call it a float (watch the video above to see why it's not), but Vernors (a Detroit original) and vanilla ice cream together are called a Boston Cooler (named for a street in Detroit, not for the city in Massachusetts) . (10best)
