‘The New Mutants’ Trailer: Welcome a New Class of X-Men

Did you know baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous than adult ones? This a movie about baby rattlesnakes. Mutants, with powers just like the X-Men, who haven’t learned to control them yet.

This is The New Mutants, inspired by the Marvel Comic where Professor Xavier brought a new class of kids to be his students, after the original X-Men got older and went off on their own. The film version, by Josh Boone, doesn’t appear to have Xavier in it and this definitely ain’t the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. As one of the characters puts it in the trailer “This isn’t a hospital, it’s a haunted house!” (That kid’s mutant power is the ability to write movie taglines instantly.)

There’s no official synopsis for The New Mutants yet, but you do see glimpses of all the main characters above. Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch plays Magik, a powerful sorcerer (and sister of the X-Man Colossus). Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things is Cannonball who is “nigh invulnerable” while flying. Henry Zaga is Sunspot, who has energy and solar powers. Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones is Wolfsbane, who transforms into a werewolf. And Blu Hunt is Mirage, who has incredible mental abilities. The woman talking to (threatening?) them all is Alice Braga. She is also playing a character from X-Men lore, Dr. Cecilia Reyes, although her portrayal in the trailer doesn’t quite jive with her not-super-menacing-and-creepy character from the comics.

As a longtime comic-book reader, this trailer is a little surreal. It’s the New Mutants, but not; and certainly the movie bears little resemblance to the X-Men movie franchise that inspired it. But Fox has done a good job in recent years making superhero movies with a twist, perhaps New Mutants will prove similarly successful in expanding the boundaries of the genre. It opens in theaters on April 13, 2018.
