With Indoor Theaters Closed, Muskegon’s Getty Drive-In Remains Open

Did you know you can still watch movies at the Getty Drive-In? The Muskegon Drive-in is staying open past its usual operating season as indoor theaters are closed right now due to the COVID-19 restrictions, MLive reports.

This week Governor Gretchen Whitmer along with the Michigan Department of Health and Humane Services announced that Michigan's "Pause to Save Lives" has been extended through Sunday, December 20. This includes the temporary closure of indoor movie theaters.

Emily Loeks with Celebration Cinema tells MLive,

“We’d actually intended to close after Halloween, as we did last year. And with our ability to open theaters, that seemed like the best plan. We got a few steps into that and then with the most recent round of constraints on businesses like ours and another temporary shutdown, we realized this is the only way to see new movies.”

Loeks says this is probably the strangest and the hardest year Celebration Cinemas have faced in their 76-year history.

Heading to the drive-in could be a fun way to get in the holiday spirit while practicing social distancing.

Currently the Getty Drive-In is showing the following double features:

• Die Hard/ All My Life
• Dr. Suess' The Grinch/ Elf
• The Croods: A New Age/ The Christmas Chronicles 2
• The Polar Express/ Christmas Vacation

As for how long the Getty Drive-In will remain open, Loeks tells MLive, “I think we’re taking it about two weeks at a time right now."
