Farmers’ Almanac Predicts Early Frosty Season in Michigan
There are times I don't want to think about the cold and snow (which is basically always), but it is a frequent occurrence here in Michigan, and there is nothing you can do to avoid it. The Farmers' Almanac drops its winter forecast like clockwork, predicting upcoming snowfall here in Michigan.
The latest 2025–26 outlook is calling for a winter wonderland here in the Great Lakes State, many snowstorms, frosty temperatures, and the occasional snow day or two, if we even still have those with online classes.
This winter is going to pack a punch, at least according to the Farmers' Almanac. The coldest stretches are going to be from the Northern Plains, and Michigan’s right in the winter crosshairs.
Two icy blasts are scheduled, one in mid-January and another in mid-February. That may be a tip to get that hot cocoa ready (not like you didn’t have it anyway).
The solstice doesn’t officially mark our true start for winter until December 21, and the cold snaps could creep in as early as September for places like Big Rapids. That means, if you need to, get stocked up on that firewood and a good set of snow tires.
While it may be voodoo in our book, the Almanac says that the cold-weather advice isn’t just guesswork on their side. It is done with predictions stemming from a formula that has been around since 1818, with solar cycles, moon phases, sunspots, and other hidden recipes from years past.
They pointed out that last winter’s prediction for a brutal January cold snap in the Great Lakes was spot-on, even with La Niña throwing some curveballs.
