MICHIGAN GHOST TOWN: The Old Mining Town of Winona

In the UP.'s Keweenaw Peninsula, the village of Winona lies quietly. You'll find this unincorporated community in Houghton County within Elm River Township.

An old mining town, Winona's boom began in 1864 when the Winona Copper Mining Company opened the village's first mine. The mine basically sat around, unproductive, until 34 years later (1898), when the Winona Copper Company took it over.

The town had a general store, tavern, schoolhouse, other shops, and a post office that lasted from 1899 to 1975.

Today, Winona is considered a ghost town, with many old & original structures and building foundations hidden within the woods.
