27th year head coach of Michigan State men's basketball Tom Izzo (pictured) announced on Wednesday that he is shuffling his coaching staff around for this coming season.

Longtime assistant Mike Garland will be reassigned from assistant coach to special assistant to the head coach.  While former Spartan player and Izzo assistant Mark Montgomery will take Garland's place as assistant coach.

Izzo said at his press conference that he wants Garland to do less off-campus recruiting and to work more with Izzo on film preparation and more in-person instruction of current players.

There were going to be changes after last season because of the departure of assistant Dane Fife back to his alma mater of Indiana.  As well as the loss of video coordinator Drew Denisco.

Dwayne Stephens stays on as Associate Head Coach and Doug Wojcik remains on staff as well.  Former Izzo players Matt McQuaid and Austin Thornton are also joining the staff this year.

The Spartans were 15-13 last season and lost in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to Maryland.  And then they lost to UCLA in overtime in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament.

They are ranked in the Receiving Votes category of the inaugural Associated Press men's college basketball poll.  The Spartans are picked to finish 6th in the Big Ten this season.
