There Are Now Over 150 COVID-19 Outbreaks At Michigan Schools
A new milestone was hit on Monday as 156 schools across the state now have COVID-19 outbreaks. The new total was released on November 2nd and included 45 new outbreaks that added to the 111 ongoing outbreaks.
The total number of outbreaks was also up from week to week, with 127 outbreaks for the week of October 26th and 120 total outbreaks for the week of October 19th.
The new outbreaks are in 16 elementary schools and pre-schools, 6 junior highs and middle schools, 22 high schools, and 1 college. The new COVID-19 cases at the schools are affecting either students, staff, and in some cases both.
It's hard to say who is affected more, staff or students, due to the way that the outbreaks are reported. The state lists the positive COVID-19 cases as either being from students, staff, or both. So, if there are 10 cases at a school and it affects both students and staff (listed as both), it does not determine how many cases are from students vs staff.
The most common schools to be experiencing an outbreak are high schools, but at the same time, almost every college and university in the state is currently experiencing COVID-19 cases on or off campus. As positive COVID-19 numbers continue to grow and the winter is fast approaching, expect more and more schools to be added to the list in the coming months.
