I'm patting myself on the back for this one. I stumbled onto something and the deeper down the rabbit hole I went, the more money I saved.

I was planning on flying to Alaska this summer to go back and visit some friends. I used to live there and not only would it be a trip back, but also a pretty decent summer vacation. Eat other people's salmon & king crab legs and crash at their houses.

When I go back I can visit Anchorage, Fairbanks, and see this thing.

This is me hanging out at the infamous Call Of The Wild bus...ok well the replica at the 49th State Brewing Company in Healy/Denali, Alaska.

So when I get back I got it made.

Now, getting there.

Flying out of Detroit Metro via Alaska Airlines, I was looking at $400 and up for one way. No bueno.

I searched some more and found out that if I flew out of Chicago, I could cut that ticket price pretty much in half and get to and from Alaska for about that much.

Ok, so I'm flying out of Chicago. But now I'd have to drive there and park and leave the car for the better part of a week. That's going to be hella expensive.

I could see if someone would give me a ride but then they would have to take me and come back to get me. Inconvenience for them and that's a long haul to drop off and pick up.

Then I remembered, WE'VE GOT A TRAIN STATION IN EAST LANSING.

And you know what? If you get the right one, it'll cost about $30 bucks at it's lowest to get from here to the Chi.

There is one daily train from East Lansing to Chicago. Traveling by train from East Lansing to Chicago usually takes around 3 hours and 51 minutes, but some trains might arrive slightly earlier or later than scheduled. (Wanderu)

I then did some more digging and found this out. Amtrack is offering 50% off tickets for their 50th anniversary celebration.

Time to party like we’re 50. (Because… we are). To celebrate a half a century of moving America where it wants to go, Amtrak is offering 50% off Coach fares, and Acela Business class, with a maximum fare of $50 per segment on select routes all across the country. (Amtrack)

Sadly however "none of the select fares are departing in Michigan, however trips from Chicago to Minneapolis are as low as $36 and a trip from Chicago to Los Angeles is as low as $50". (WILX)

But still, this is great in case you want to get back out there now that things are opening up and you are fully vaccinated right? $30 bucks to get from here to Chicago and then the rest of the country is at your fingertips for as low as $50 bucks? And for how long?

  • For sale: April 28–May 5, 2021.
  • For travel: June 2–November 13, 2021. (Amtrack)

All aboard this summer my friends. Let's get out and go see some stuff.
