Starbucks may be slamming the brakes on parts of its empire, closing just about 1% of its North American stores, which is about 450 of them. The headline is real, but what could that be for Michigan locations?

There is no neat public list being posted about the stores that are actually being affected at this time with the closures, but it doesn't mean we haven't seen closures this year here in Michigan.

What’s Changing in Mid-Michigan

The original Grand River and Charles Street Starbucks in East Lansing closed its doors back on August 31st of this year, after more than two decades of serving the college students.

The staff were moved to a new East Lansing store by Trader Joe's, which opened in September, so it wasn't really a goodbye, so much as a move down the street. But that can't be said for all the other stores.

What Starbucks Just Announced

Starbucks announced that it is shifting away from some high-friction formats and doubling down on the true cafe spaces where you can actually sit, meet people, and plug your computer in.

If you're wondering about our stores here in Mid-Michigan, we could be in the clear? But don't expect a full list breakdown just yet. Business Insider has been compiling confirmed closures through on-the-ground checks.

Grand Rapids’ Pickup-Only Location

Also, the only pickup-only store is in Ionia and Oakes, which was flagged earlier in the year as a part of the "close or convert" strategy. But, no word on our stores here in Mid-Michigan, though not many are pick-up only stores.
