I was adulting hard this past weekend. I went out to buy pillows. I got a flyer from Kohls, there was a sale, it was buy one get the other one half off, AND there was an additional 15% off.

I had paid down the balance on the charge card so I was good to go.

Before I get to my tag ripping experience, pillows are expensive. And I'm talking pillows to sleep on for your bed. Not the "oh these are for decorations" and you have nowhere to sit pillows. Those too are pricey but regular sleeping pillows?

Memory foam, cooling, foam core, for side sleepers, for back sleepers, etc.

There was one from Sealy that was $119 bucks for ONE PILLOW! I'm not cheap but for that price it better sing me a lullaby and tell me a bedtime story. That's a my head hits the pillow and I'm out in 30 seconds it's so comfortable pillow.

Long story short, I settled on this extra fim, complete support something or another from Sealy that was roughly about $30 bucks a pop. I got 2. Buy one get one half off, throw in the 15% off and I'm walking away just shy of $40 bucks or so.

When I get home and take em out, they of course have these long tags on them because pillows and mattresses come with this warning FROM GOD HIMSELF that says THOU SHALT NOT REMOVE THESE TAGS WITHOUT GRAVE PENALTY or punishable by death or something. This applies to everyone but the buyer who is now me.

So as I see it, I can rip off the annoying tag. I did it for one and no problem. No alarms or nothing. No mattress or pillow police (which after I typed it sounds kind of cool...pillow police...ahhh).

I pulled the tag off the second pillow and I get this.

You gotta be kidding me right?!?

I hate this. And at first I'm thinking, meh...I wanna sleep on the new comfy pillows but I'm gonna have to sew this.

Then I'm like, wait a minute. I just paid for this. And this is a $30 dollar pillow. I'm not sewing this. I'm taking it back.

I told a friend of mine the frustration and they had the nerve to tell me, "they might not take it back".

The devil is a lie. Why not?

"Cause you ripped the tag off and you're not supposed to do that..to pillows or mattresses".

Come again?

I am said consumer and I can remove the tag. It pretty much says so on the tag you think I'm not supposed to remove.

Plus I have my receipt.

They're going to take it back. They have to right?

Do you believe that you should never remove your mattress and pillow tags?

You know why this tag is there right?

Mattress and pillow manufacturers were required to clearly define the contents of their products and to identify whether or not these contents were new or recycled materials by placing tags on them. This was important as recycled materials could still contain lice, bedbugs or human excretion. In order to ensure no pillow and mattress sellers removed these tags in order to make the sale, they were stamped, in bold letters, with a clear message – “Do not remove under penalty of law”. The words, “except by the consumer” have since been added but not a lot of consumers bother to read the tags in detail. (TodayIFoundOut)

I'm taking it back. And I'm getting my refund. Well, actually I just want another pillow. That I am totally going to remove the tag from. Just...this time not so rough. Maybe cut it off with some scissors.

And you can safely remove the tags from your pillows and mattresses.

You're welcome.
