Before you reach for that canned stew for your lunch or dinner, you should check the labeling on your package, as there is a massive recall coming to the state of Michigan that you should be aware of.

Why This Recall Happened

It was announced on Thursday, May 28th, 2026, that Hormel Foods Corporation voluntarily recalled about 256,185 pounds of their Dinty Moore Beef stew, after some consumers had found pieces of wood in their cans.

Quickly after spotting this, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a Class I recall, which means that the product being recalled could cause serious health issues.

Products Affected

Here is what you should look for when checking your cabinets:

  • 20 oz. metal cans labeled Dinty Moore BEEF STEW
  • Lot code: T02045 (may include an extra digit)
  • Best-by date: FEB 2028
  • Establishment number: EST 199G
  • Production date: February 4, 2025

This product was distributed across stores here in the state of Michigan, as well as across the country.

At this time, there have been no serious reports of injury caused by the affected product, however, consumers are warned to not open or consume the contents inside of these cans.

What to Do If You Have Affected Cans

If you do have any of the affected products, you are urged to return them to your place of purchase for a full refund or to simply toss the product out.
