The pandemic has been difficult for all of us. It's been extremely difficult for those who work in the restaurant business.

Several eateries have considered closing their doors until the pandemic is over and some already have. The famous Schuler's Restaurant announced last month they'd be temporarily closing their doors after Christmas Eve. 33% of business owners even feared that they'd be forced to close their doors for good if they didn't receive relief packages from the government.

The popular barbecue joint in Reo Town and Okemos, Saddleback, recently wrote an open letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer asking that she safely open restaurants as soon as possible. And it's been signed by 100 restaurants in the state of Michigan.

Co-owners Matthew Gillett and Travis Stoliker, wrote the letter together. Stoliker says they've received mixed reviews from it. Many have applauded the letter, while some disapprove.

The letter was shared on the restaurants social media accounts last week.

Two days prior to the post, Gov. Whitmer announced restaurants would remain closed for dine-in services until the end of January with take out being the only option for most eateries. Stoliker says, take out only makes up 30% of their business.

Saddleback BBQ, along with many restaurants have been doing their best to give back to their communities safely. They've provided food for essential health care workers, children in need, and so many more. They've also offered curbside, catering, take out and delivery in order to stay afloat.

"Restaurants are the backbone of a community, employing over 15 million people nationally, and feeding our communities."
