NASCAR Takes to Michigan International Speedway but There’s Something Major Missing
Canadian NASCAR fans have been putting the "International" in Michigan International Speedway for years; however, as MIS allows fans back at the track for the first time since 2019, there's still something missing.
How the August 2021 MIS Race is Different
While fans have been allowed back there are some changes in place as Michigan and the rest of the country (and the world) still deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
For example, masks have been required in all indoor or enclosed spaces, as announced the week of the race.
Even passes, tickets and transactions are moved to be more digitally-focused to minimize contact.
Why Canadians Can't Come This Time
While Canada has reopened its borders to Americans, the USA is still closed off to the rest of the world.
That means, while we can go there, they can't come here which is sad news for Canadian NASCAR fans as Michigan is the closest the racecars get for them.
Michigan International Speedway usually hosts tons of fans from Canada. So much so, according to MLive, "MIS wouldn’t say what percentage of its fans come from Canada, but a 2014 University of Michigan economic impact study found Canadians made up 12% of general admission tickets and 19% of the infield camping spots."
MIS usually performs the Canadian National Anthem, along with United States' and MLive reports they even started offering a currency exchange at the track in the 2010's as well as opening up the "Northern Exposure" concession stand that offers "Canadian delicacies"
Canada Still Well-Represented
According to MLive, there are still Canadian flags flying and the Canadian National Anthem will still be played before the race.
MLive even shares the story of some Canadian fans who were able to finagle their way to the track thanks to their dual-citizenship between the United States and Toronto.
All in all, as the cup series race gets underway today, while the Candian NASCAR fans can't be there in person, they are there in spirit.
