MSU President Stays In East Lansing With $1.5 Million Deal
Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz is staying in East Lansing, and now we know what the new deal looks like.
Kevin Guskiewicz’s New MSU Contract
According to the contract released by MSU, Guskiewicz’s agreement now runs through March 4, 2031. Starting August 1, his annual base salary will move up to $1.5 million. That is an increase from just over $1 million a year.
What The New Deal Includes
There are a few other pieces in the contract, too. Guskiewicz will have access to a university vehicle and driver for official MSU business. He will also have a vehicle available for personal use.
The contract also allows him to use a university aircraft for up to 10 hours per year. If he uses the aircraft for personal reasons, it will count as taxable income.
Guskiewicz’s Decision To Stay
This all comes after a pretty wild few weeks at Michigan State. Guskiewicz had previously announced that he was leaving MSU to become the next president at Clemson University. That announcement came after public tension and leadership concerns involving the MSU Board of Trustees.
Then came the reversal.
Guskiewicz announced that he would stay with Michigan State, saying that he and his wife, Amy, had spent some time reflecting on what MSU means to them and their family. He said East Lansing has become their home.
For MSU, this contract is about trying to bring stability back to the university after a lot of leadership drama in recent years.
Guskiewicz has said that trust will have to be earned through consistency, transparency, and action. For Spartans, that is probably the part they will be watching closely over the next few years.
