Quick heads-up for anyone who keeps a stash of bottled water in the garage, pantry, or next to the coffee maker: Meijer has a distilled water recall that is hitting Michigan right now.

What’s being recalled and why

The FDA says some gallon jugs of Meijer Steam Distilled Water may contain a floating black “foreign substance.” In other words, something that shouldn’t be in your water to begin with. Even if your jug looks fine at first glance, it may not be worth the gamble.

How to check your jug in 10 second

This is the one-gallon plastic jug with the red cap. The recall was first posted November 13, 2025, and it’s still listed as ongoing. The FDA hasn’t said exactly what the black material is yet, and it also hasn’t assigned a risk level, but foreign stuff in a consumable product is a red flag.

If you want to know if your product is a part of the recall, flip the jug around and check for these exact identifiers:

  • UPC: 041250941197
  • Best-By Date: October 4, 2026
  • Lot Code: 49-222 #3

Some listings may also include Product ID 472859 and Meijer Item Code 477910. If it all matches, you should treat it as part of the recall, even if you don’t see anything in your product.

Distilled water isn’t just for sipping. People use it for baby formula prep, CPAP machines, humidifiers, and sinus rinses. If there’s any mysterious debris inside it, it could cause more trouble than it’s worth.

What to do if you have it

If you have the affected product, don’t drink it, don’t cook with it, and don’t pour it into anything you’re trying to clean with.

Return the jug to Meijer for a refund, or contact Meijer for guidance.

Good news: no illnesses have been reported so far. Still, if you’ve already used it and you feel sick, you should contact your doctor.
