The risk of Listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious illness, is especially concerning in school settings.

Listeria can be found in soil, water, and even in animal products like meat and dairy. Unlike other bacteria, it can grow in cold environments, meaning it can survive in your refrigerator or even your freezer, which makes it especially dangerous.
Listeriosis typically affects people with weakened immune systems, including pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
For most healthy people, symptoms might be mild—fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea—but in more vulnerable demographics, it can lead to serious complications like meningitis or even miscarriage in pregnant women.
