We’ll see temperatures near freezing on Friday, then the bottom drops out again as we head into the weekend, and we’re supposed to pick up some snow. Then early next week is when it gets downright mean.
Here’s When the Cold Turns Dangerous
Arctic air will move in, and Monday is shaping up to be the coldest day. Highs may barely creep above 10 degrees, and the wind is expected to make it feel well below zero.
Why Lansing Extended Code Blue
Because of that, the City of Lansing has extended its Code Blue plan. It’s now expected to stay in place overnight through 7 a.m. at least through Saturday, January 24. (It was expected to end earlier.)
What Code Blue Means for Shelters and Transportation
Quick refresher on what Code Blue actually means here in the capital city: it gives local shelters more flexibility to extend hours and expand capacity, and it allows Lansing Fire and Police to help transport people who need a safe, warm place to go.
A couple of practical details worth noting.
- Letts Community Center is being used as an overnight warming center during the activation window, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- CATA is offering free bus rides for anyone who needs transportation to warming centers or shelters.
- BWL Pauses electric shutoffs for non-payment whenever the city declares a Code Blue.
