Rise of the Ship Marketplace
Kroger expanded their shopping experience back in 2018, with Kroger Ship, which allowed customers to buy and purchase items from their center-aisle stores, as well as their private label items.
Kroger teamed up with Mirakl in 2020 to open the marketplace to even more sellers, making things like organic foods, toys, and even housewares available to ship from places like FedEx, USPS, or UPS. At one point, they even partnered with Bed Bath and Beyond.
Quiet Shutdown in March 2025
Earlier in March of this year, Kroger simply removed the ship storefront without any formal announcement. Now, customers are being redirected to their pickup and grocery delivery options, instead of using their Kroger Ship platform.
Why Ship Fell Short
With things like teaming with many third parties, the grocery stores tend to absorb any additional fees, which can add up at the end of the day. As well, with pick-up and delivery being offered same day, Kroger Ship seemed obsolete with the timeline of deliveries offered by Kroger.
While Kroger Ship may be a thing of the past, their services, like store pick-up as well as delivery, will stay the same, allowing Michigan shoppers the convenience of avoiding the long lines and walking up and down busy aisles.
