The new scam doesn't involve actually being summoned for jury duty, however. It actually is that you missed a jury summons and are in trouble with the law. But, you're not actually in any trouble at all.
The scammers will demand a payment be made to get you out of trouble in the form of gift cards, or other weird ways to make up for any potential fine. They may even threaten to arrest you, get you fired or worse.
These are typical tactics of someone trying to get information from you to possibly steal your information. They may even ask for something as simple as your social security number.
If you do find yourself receiving weird texts like this from non-official government numbers, you may be a part of a scam that is trending right now in Michigan. Authorities are urging you to ignore these and never to provide any information regarding your own identity.
The best way to tell if these are legit, are to reach out to a local court, or government official for verification.
