Chance The Rapper and More Mourn Director John Singleton's Death

The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of legendary filmmaker John Singleton, who passed away on Monday (April 29) following a stroke he suffered 12 days ago after returning from Costa Rica and experiencing problems with his legs. He was 51.

In 1992, Singleton was the youngest, at age 24, and the first African American to get an Oscar nomination for best director for his landmark film Boyz N the Hood (he was also nominated for best screenplay as well). He went on to direct notable movies including Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Baby Boy, Four Brothers and the 2000 Shaft reboot, as well as 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious.

On Monday afternoon, the filmmaker's family issued a statement announcing Singleton's death.

"John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends," reads one part of the statement from Singleton's family. "We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time."

Upon hearing the sad news of Singleton's death, several rappers went on social media to pay tribute to the director.

"Rest up John Singleton. We never met, but Remember The Time literally changed my life. Thank you so much. God Bless you," tweeted Chance The Rapper.

Snoop Dogg, who starred in Baby Boy with Tyrese in 2001, wrote on his Instagram account, "Thank you for all that you gave to the world the movies the messages the opportunities to so many people like myself to grace the big screen in a major role with major black actors you were and will allways be black excellence love you for life and beyond 🌹🙏🏾💙. J.S."
